Hi Dave,
I really like your site but I think the forum has a problem and actually is not that efficient.

FIRST
I understand that gaijin henros are very few every year so there are few posts in the forum but I think that the forum would improve if you could receive a e-mail every time there is a reply in a topic you are interested in.

Actually there is the option: "Check this if you wish to be notified of replies to this topic" but how it works? I have to enter the forum, login and check for "notification".
Doesn't work.

It would be really better to have the option: "Check this if you wish to be notified BY E-MAIL of replies to this topic"

SECOND
Actually the forum works in this way: someone write a new topic; usually you are the only-one to answer; if he's lucky he get some answer from someone else that is planing or is walking the pilgrimage in that period of time.

Problem is that pilgrims that walked the trail have no incentives to return in the forum.
Probably a lot of former henros would be happy to share their experience here but they just don't enter the forum that often.
In this way we are wasting a lot of precious experience.

I imagine when you finish the pilgrimage you return to work.
You talk about it with relatives and friends.
May be you check the forum a pair of time.
Then you return to your routine.
After six months you think: Let's check the forum. There are a couple of interesting threads you would like to reply but the threads are 2 months old and so you write nothing.

A weekly mail that notify the new threads would resolve this problem:
- Saturday morning you receive the weekly mail that advise you there is some one asking about trekking poles.
- You walked your pilgrimage with trekking poles and you decide to share you experience.
- The guy asking wrote 4 days ago, he checked for 2 days but he received no answer so he's discouraged and he's not checking the forum anymore, but suddenly he receive a mail that his thread received a reply and so he enter the forum.
- If he has more questions he replies, you receive by mail the notification of replies etc.

I think a weekly mail with the new threads would increase the traffic and the vitality of this forum.

Just my two cents.

Iagree with you 100% on all of your points. You are so correct, it's worth 100 cents, not just two. smiley

But, there is nothing i can do. I think. I have no control over the forum functionality. I just chose this company because it was free and i'm the only one paying for the web site. Sorry, but i can't afford the better, but more expensive, forum service poviders.

I started the forum idea so that others had a chance to contribute and my words on the web site were not the only version of the truth. Every now and then i don't repond to people on the forum just so the answer doesn't always come from me.

But as you've noticed, frequently i'm the only one around who has actually done the walk so might have an answer. Eventually i break down an reply just so the peron gets an answer. I don't know how to solve the problem.

@jimdigrizz
I tried the notification funtionality. After typing the above reply to your post, i went back and asked to be notified about updates to several of the most active threads.

This morning i got an email (without logging in!) from the forum saying:

"Hey Shikoku Henro Trail,
A reply, Re: food issues , has been posted to a topic you are watching.

View it at
http://shikokuhenro.conforums.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&num=1393645102

Regards,
Pilgrimage On Shikoku Island: Forum"

So, i don't know what you did, but the forum WILL email you and tell you that someone has posted on an existed thread.

Interesting.

I comprehend that gaijin henros are not very many consistently so there are few posts in the discussion yet I believe that the gathering would enhance on the off chance that you could get an email each time there is an answer in a theme you are occupied with. As a matter of fact, there is the alternative: Do my Essay "Check this on the off chance that you wish to be informed of answers to this point" yet how it works? I need to enter the discussion, sign in and check for "notification".Doesn't work. It would be truly better to have the alternative: "Check this in the event that you wish to be told BY E-MAIL of answers to this subject"
