Bring a little osettai gift for the host, whoever that turns out to be. Some sweets are nice.
Always ask first if you can stay, and if there's laundry or shower or bath ask permission for that too. Remember, you're a guest, not an entitled customer.
This advice comes from watching another henro anger the head monk.
If you're courteous, you'll have a much better experience.
